How to solve external hard disk malfunction?

Yeah so I recently(roughly 6 months back) bought a 300gb external hard disk and yeah so long so good except for some days back it started giving me problems. and in the middle a virus had also sneaked in. Although got it cleaned in the pc it still existed in the external and so external was not connection to pc properly but somehow got it connected and also cleaned external but still external malfunctions even though there's no virus. By malfunction I mean when it connects it does so and goes off within a time span of 5-20 minutes and sometimes it doesn't even connect....please help. I stay in Qatar and no one is ready to repair it saying they are not authorized to repair it and I should take it to the place where i bought it from(India). Since i can't go to India now please suggest a solution.

Update:

so you say that if i input this drive into my pc as an internal it will work perfect?

    eh.. it's worth a shot.

open up the external assembly and you'll find a perfectly normal hard drive inside. open up your pc and mount it there.

if it works, hurrah~ double scan for that virus again. and the external case may be going.

if it fails, well oops, HDD is going.

You might just have to restart your computer. The USB drive malfunctioned not the hard drive. Try using a different USB port. It happens to me all the time and i never had to reinstall windows or get a new HDD

i had a problem with my external drive recently. it was connected through a usb connection. I found that the interface between the hard drive and the USB plug on the external enclosure had gone bad.

How did I discover this? well i took the drive out of the enclosure and plugged it right up as an internal drive on my Ubuntu Linux box. Once I force mounted the drive, it worked fine.
