What is in instant hot chocolate that would produce this effect?

I have a white ceramic coffee mug at work that gets a lot of use. Over time it develops substantial brown stains inside it that are extremely difficult to remove. I can use dish soap, hot water and a scrubber and still not get all of the stain removed. However, if I fix a mug of hot chocolate using the packets of instant mix, I can rinse out the mug using only water and find that the brown stains have disappeared. What is in that stuff? Can it be doing the same thing to my stomach?

It's probably the abrasive action from the undissolved solids (sugar and cocoa) as you stir in the hot water.

As for your insides, no hot cocoa won't clean them out. If you looked at your insides with an endoscope, they'll still be stained brown like the inside of your coffee cup ;-)

All the ingredients in hot chocolate seem safe and edible, maybe the sugar is just collecting on the gunk on your cup and helping it come off?
