Are mealworms a good ferret treat?

I recently got a young ferret off craigslist and he's a little too skinny. Would mealworms be a good treat to get his weight up?

I'm not sure about mealworms... I think the trick would be getting him to eat it. I don't suppose they'd necessarily be *bad* for it, but even with all the protein, I'm not sure it would be adequate.

This is the answer I just gave to a guy who found a malnourished ferret:

Ask around at some vets and see if any of them carry Carnivore Care. It's a powdered supplement that you add a bit of water to and it helps a ferret bounce back and get the nutrients it needs. Also, you can get Science Diet A/D for cats and dogs from Petsmart. It comes in what looks like a small, flat cat food can. Add to it plain Stage 1 Chicken or Turkey baby food. Water it down (I water mine down with Unflavored Pedialyte to help keep them hydrated because when they're not eating they're usually not drinking either). There's also 8-in-1 FerreVITE. It's a molasses-textured vitamin and calorie supplement meant to get a ferret his appetite back. Follow the directions on the back of the tube. You can also look online for "Duck Soup" recipes. It's a concoction made to nurse sick ferrets back to health.

(If its not eating, you need to force feed it. Put it in a feeding syringe (you can find these at Petsmart or the vet) and whilst scruffing the ferret, inject it into the corner of their mouth. Be careful not to shove it too far into their mouth or feed it too fast. You don't want the food going down its windpipe and choking it or getting it into its lungs.)

Also, I highly recommend buy Ferrets for Dummies by Kim Schilling. It will tell you virtually everything you need to know about owning a ferret.

I buy my ferret supplies from Ferret.com. Generally, their prices are MUCH better than the pet store - even when you tack on shipping.

Source(s): Owns 4 ferrets. Been there, done that. :)
