Should I still wear a mouthguard if I am going to wear a full cage?

I'm going to start playing in an adult recreational hockey league for the first time. The league is non - contact, but I was curious if I should still be wearing a mouth guard even if I am wearing a full cage. I don't want to wear one if it will be totally useless.

    Yes!

I have been playing goaltender for awhile now and have seen guys get some nasty head injuries. Even though it's non contact, we always have a hot head of two in the league that takes a cheap shot. Sometimes two players accidentally collide especially in adult recreational leagues. That mouth guard will prevent any serious head injuries such as concussions or at least lessen the severity. They also prevent jaw fractures. I had a friend who didn't wear one and when he was "laid out" he was out cold, we had to call 911 for an ambulance and he still has some bad headaches when it happened in October. I even wear one playing goaltender - sometimes guys lose edges and plow into me and my head hits the steel posts. I highly recommend Shock Doctor.

Yes. From what I've been told, the purpose of a mouthguard is twofold. One to protect your teeth, the other, to protect you from a concussion. In youth hockey we have to wear them to serve the second purpose. Though it is a non-contact league, you never know what can happen. Also like also stated, biting your tongue can be a very painful and disgusting thing

no it is more useless than the people who are saying yes. i have never seen anything happen to players who have a cage and no mouth guard in 8 years of officiating and 12 years of playing. ive seen aloooot but never anything where a mouth guard would have helped a person wearing a cage. actually you would look like a tool if you wore one.

You can breath and communicate better without one. It does not prevent concussions. I have never seen anyone chip a tooth with a full shield. You are probably more likely to break a collar bone or separate a shoulder or get a concussion. Maybe should spend more time picking a good helmet that can actually prevent concussions.

You should probably wear a one if this is your first time on skates to protect you from hurting your head when falling. However, if you are confident with your skating then you wont need one in a non-contact league.

Yes you can still loose your balance and fall over. Wear a mouthguard to prevent concussions and prevent you from biting your tongue in half.

I think you should You can never be to safe. I got a bad injury once, and it was not pretty. SO i suggest you do it, even if it may be completely pointless

Yes because non-contact doesn't mean an errant stick or puck could come near you.

Source(s): The league I played in last yr was non-check, took some getting used to but it's safer.
