Aquarium Sump Question?

I need a little help with my sump project.

I currently have a sump, with the pump to pump the water back up to the main tank.

However, I'm having trouble figuring out how to have the water come back into the sump. Ideally i should get the tank drilled. But i cant, so I'm looking for other ideas.

I was told at my local shop that I could use a syphon to take the water out. but if thats the case, what happens if the power goes out?

Even if i made a hole at the top of the syphon so that if the water level drops too much air will stop the syphon working. but if i did that, then what happens when the power comes back on? the syphon will have stopped and my tank will be flooded!

If anyone can think of any ideas i would be gratefull!

I was have looked into one of those overflow boxs, but they are really expensive, and would not fit on the side of my tank as it has a lid.

Thanks in advance for any answers, I'm really stumped on this one!

An overflow will be the best way to go. Look up local saltwater forums in your area. The will have for sale threads and you can buy stuff MUCH cheaper than rip you a new one hobby stores. WIth an overflow box water will stay put thus maintaining the siphon. When power is restored the drain continues. Although now that I think about it there are surge devices that might stay off until manually flipped or at best get a battery back up but then the cost of that will mean you should've splurged for the overflow and done away with the cover. An open cover will allow a much better gas exchange and keep the aquarium cooler. Theres ways to fix a jumping fish without going to the extreme of a several hundred dollar battery pack for a pump.

if you have a a canopy for it then yes drilling it would be your best bet but definately make sure what you are doing before. If there is no canopy then get an overflow box. This basicly hangs off your tank and acts as a syphon would. Here is the same one i use:

    very easy to set up

    best of luck
