noise on Mercedes 200k?

i have a 6 year old mercedes c class 200k, owned it from new, 40,000 miles. over the last year a vibrating knocking noise has developed which from the driving position sounds like someone has left a wooden handled screw driver in the engine somewhere and it's vibrating around with all the bumps in the road.. when your driving you can make the noise happen by quickly turning the steering from side to side. when the car is parked you can make it happen with 2 people pulling on the front wheel arches from side to side, not up and down.

any ideas what this could be, as my mechanic can't find it.

Could be something loose in between the inner & outer wings or as suggested above, anti roll bar bushes.
