During the Victorian Era, was it proper for women to laugh loudly?
I was told that it wasn't by a former teacher of mine. I'm profiling a dearly departed old friend who was a special member of our church. I was given most of the information by her daughter-in-law, and was told this as fact. I'm really curious about this. She always had a cute little barely audible giggle, and I am wondering if this is why.

Goodness no! Victorian era women were not allowed to do anything that drew any sort of attention to themselves. They learned restraint at a very young age. Women were hardly ever heard but always seen. For instance, we know about Molly Brown because she WAS loud and obnoxious and thought of as "uncouth". There were a lot of women who socialized with her but secretly were scandalized and shocked at her outgoing, loud, boisterous nature.
