I've been a witch for 15 years. I'm a firm believer in free will and that chocolate chip cookies are a gift from the Goddess. I believe that the Bible is a huge mishmash of silliness that the world would be better without. I believe that no one should proselytize anywhere, ever, for ANY reason. Oh, and I'm a big Harry Potter fan as well as a Lord of the Rings geek. :)

  • Is it legal to charge independent contractors a fee for using direct deposit?

The company I work for pays independent contractors for work. They are NOT employees. I work in Accounts Payable and I have been told by management that charging independent contractors a fee for direct deposit is not illegal, but I am being asked this question repeatedly. I cannot find a website detailing this as being legal. Can anyone help direct me to a website explaining why it IS legal so I can point these IC's in that direction?

  • If I hire an independent contractor, such as a freelance interpreter, can I.....?

Ask them for their Driver's License and SS card? They're not filling out an I-9 because they are not an employee. My HR manager and I are disagreeing on this but I would love a professional opinion. I say they shouldn't have to show us their ID's and she says they should because they could be illegal aliens and we can get in trouble for paying illegal aliens. These folks are signing an IC agreement and sending us a W9. I just need to know if we can legally ask them for their Driver's license and SS card.

  • If we paid a $600 non-refundable pet deposit on our apartment...?

My roommate and I moved into an apartment, and we each paid $300 for our cats for a total of $600. We also paid a security deposit of $150. When I spoke to the office to let them know that we were moving out, she told me that we would get the security deposit back if the apartment was clean and nothing was broken. Nothing is broken, and we plan on cleaning, but the carpet was peed on by my roommate's cat several times in two spots in the same room. My roommate believes that the apartment complex can charge us for the cost to replace the carpet after we have moved out. How can they do that if we paid them $600, non refundable, for pet damage? Is she right or would that $600 cover us? We live in Florida. We doubt we'll get the $150 back as that hardly ever happens, but I just want to find out if it's legal to charge us above and beyond the $600 for pet damage. Any advice is appreciated!

  • Christians: What's the one thing in the Bible that you honestly can't believe?

There are a lot of stories in the Bible, many of them are fairly fantastical. Out of the whole Bible, what are some things (or even ONE thing) that you have a gut feeling is an embellishment, exaggeration, or is hard to believe?

  • How many Christians really know the history of their own religion?

When I was a Christian, I was told from an early age (Sunday School) to believe everything my pastor said and believe the Bible. When I questioned things, I was punished and told that I needed to have faith. As I grew older, I continued to question and began researching the history of Christianity. My question is - How can Christians blindly believe everything and not at least acknowledge their history, the inconsistencies and the contradictions of their own doctrine? If your priest/pastor/minister told you that God told him that all birds were from the Devil, would you believe him? At what point does the rational mind say: "Hey wait a minute, that makes no sense" AND at what point do you tell that voice to shut up and just follow along like a good little sheep?

I'm just wondering why most Christians haven't a CLUE about their history and laws, and yet just regurgitate what they've been told with glassy smiles. When confronted with common sense and a view of the timeline of Christianity, one Christian told me that I was under the influence of the Devil and she wouldn't speak to me again. What is so scary about the history that they run from it screaming Satanic involvement?

    Sorry...lots of questions...

  • Do you consider the cross an "Idol"?

A friend of mine is a Jehovah's Witness and he said that people worship the cross, and therefore it is considered an Idol. The Bible says "Thou shalt not have any other gods before me" and he said the cross (either with or without the form of Jesus upon it) is considered an idol, and is a sin to worship because you're worshipping that and not God.

Since I am not Christian, I thought this was sort of odd. I don't see the cross as an idol, I see it as a symbol of the Christian faith. Does anyone else have any input on this? I'm just curious.

  • My check engine light went off after I went over a bump?

My check engine light was on indicating that the temperature sensor needed to be replaced. This happened five days after I drove my used 2008 Ford Focus off the used car lot. They offered to fix it and I was planning on doing so after Christmas. But yesterday morning I was driving somewhere and hit a speed bump a little faster than I normally do, and the light went off. And although I have been over several more speed bumps ever since, the light has not come back on. Should I continue to wait and see if the light comes back on? If it doesn't, should I assume the whole thing was a fluke and it didn't really need to be replaced?

If it comes back on I fully intend on having the code read again to make sure it's the same issue and not a brand new one.

    Advice?

  • No taxes taken out of my first paycheck?

I just started working for a real estate agency in their office doing weekend only reception work. I was paid today, but no taxes were taken out of my check, and there is a letter here that is a "contract" for employment. I used to work in HR in other companies and this worries me a little, but I cannot find any answers as to whether I am considered a contract employee but not an official employee? Will I get in trouble later for not paying taxes on this income? Isn't there some other kind of tax paperwork I need? I did not fill out an I9 or W4 or any other official HR Paperwork.

  • Do I have to replace the blinds in my apartment when I move out?

There is one blind where a piece snapped off that's about 6 inches long. Will my landlord withhold my security deposit or take money off it if I do not replace this blind? It's such a small thing and there is nothing wrong with the rest of the blind. I live in Florida. I looked at the renters handbook but there is nothing in it about something this specific. I don't want to have to spend money to replace the entire blind for this one tiny piece, and using super glue isn't working and I don't want to make it worse.

  • Can someone help me with the phonetic pronunciation of a sentence in Welsh and Scots Gaelic?

I have a project I am working on for a play, and we've been asked to create a character that speaks a line from our actual blood lineage. Since my ancestors were Welsh and Scottish, I am looking for both the Welsh and the Scots Gaelic. However, I will need the actual phonetic pronunciation so I don't sound like an idiot. I would like to find someone willing to help me and perhaps create a sound file to send to me via email, or even a recording on youtube. The sentence from the play is: "I am fierce and wild. I am a woman of power. I am a witch. Be blessed or cursed as you will!”

I really hope someone who knows Welsh and Scots Gaelic would be willing to help me. The play goes off at the end of October so I have one month to get the pronunciation as well as memorize it.

    Thanks!

  • Has anyone had Gastric Bypass after failed Lap Band surgery?

I had the lap band surgery in 2005 and have not been able to lose any weight with it. I was originally scheduled to have Gastric Bypass and could not have it as I was on a high dose of Prednisone and I take Ibuprofen every day. I was forced to have the Banding instead, although I wanted the bypass surgery.

I wanted to know if anyone has had the bypass AFTER having the Lap band? I am on track to be off prednisone forever and I badly want to have the bypass to get down to a healthy weight once and for all! Any help would be appreciated!

  • Has anyone with Trigeminal Neuralgia ever had cataract surgery?

My 87 year old Grandmother suffers from Trigeminal Neuralgia and cataracts. She can hardly see and the cataract surgery will give her better eyesight, but she is afraid it will badly exacerbate the TGN. I am trying to find out stories or information on people who have TGN and have had the cataract surgery so I can tell her what might happen. The doctors are really uncertain about how it might (or might not) affect her, and she's really nervous about it.

I would love for her to be able to see better, but I also don't want her to be in pain from the TGN. If anyone can help me or give me some advice, that would be great!

  • How do you flip a video that was filmed upside down?

I filmed something with my phone's video camera upside down by accident. The format my Palm Pre put the video in is QuickTime. I've already imported the video from my phone onto my computer. Is there a way to flip the whole video so I can watch it without having to standing on my head? :)

  • Are there any legends, myths, or folklore stories from Korea involving what English speakers call Fairies?

I am looking to see if there is a Hangul (Korean) word for Faery/Fairy that has been Romanized. I am writing a story involving Korean characters and it's related to the faery realm, but I don't want to resort to using Celtic faery names as that feels really wrong to me. Any help is appreciated!

  • What's the better kind of Christian?

I think there are two kinds of Christians.

The ones who follow blindly, research nothing, and know very little about their religion’s history. These are the folks who can regurgitate scripture but have no real knowledge of the deep who’s-why’s-where’s-how’s, etc. They do exactly as they are told. However, they are mostly very kind, loving, happy, joyful, easygoing, “Let’s go to Church on Sunday and praise the Lord” kind of folks.

The other kind are the ones who have the knowledge, understand the history, and can still regurgitate scripture, but use it as a weapon. These are the more fundamental, Evangelical, demanding folks. People who consider themselves Warriors for God and/or proselytize.

I know many of you will say: “NEITHER!” and that is a valid answer, however I am asking which is better? Someone who knows nothing about their religion, follows blindly but is happy? Or someone who knows exactly what their religion is/was/does and uses that power?

Lastly, I know there are people who do both – who are intelligent and know the FULL history of Christianity and yet are the “Let’s go to Church on Sunday and praise the Lord” kind of folks who don’t feel the need to push it on everyone else. For those people, I say THANK YOU! But you must admit that most Christians fall into one category or another. I just can’t decide what irritates me more, someone who hasn’t got a clue about the history of their religion or the ones who DO and continue with it anyway.

Okay… bring on the sarcastic answers, I know you’re dying to! :)

  • Do tattoo artists not like it if you alter a design?

I found a tattoo design online that I really love except for a few things. I saved it and altered it using photoshop, but I don't know if I take it to a tattoo shop, if they'll let me use it as it was not "purchased" and was altered from the original. Will they even ask? Will they tattoo this design on me if they don't know who originally drew it?
