Has anyone with Trigeminal Neuralgia ever had cataract surgery?

My 87 year old Grandmother suffers from Trigeminal Neuralgia and cataracts. She can hardly see and the cataract surgery will give her better eyesight, but she is afraid it will badly exacerbate the TGN. I am trying to find out stories or information on people who have TGN and have had the cataract surgery so I can tell her what might happen. The doctors are really uncertain about how it might (or might not) affect her, and she's really nervous about it.

I would love for her to be able to see better, but I also don't want her to be in pain from the TGN. If anyone can help me or give me some advice, that would be great!

You should probably talk to a neurologist before the surgery and while the pain from the TGN is painful there are medications that will help reduce the pain if the cataract surgery has any adverse effects. Good luck!

It is also known as "Tic Douloureux" a condition whereby the facial pain becoms unberable due to "firing" of the Trigeminal nerve. If nothing helps, then cutting off the Nerve is the last solution. Its cause is idiopathic (unknown).
