My CD/DVD Rom Keeps Disappearing?
I have Win Vista Home Premium, on an HP Pavillion laptop. My CD/DVD Rom has disappeared. I tried installing drivers, but my computer doesn't even find the device. My husband did something with the Bios that got the drive back, but it locked up while I was using it, and by the time I restarted the computer again, it disappeared again. Any ideas on how I can fix it for good?
dfw2442 - You were close, as I did see this suggestion elsewhere, but I was too afraid to try it since it wasn't on the Windows website! lol However, that solution didn't work, because the upper and lower filters were not in the list, so there was nothing to delete. I have gotten the drive back several times, but it keeps disappearing.

There is nothing wrong with your CD/DVD drive.
Your Registry is corrupt. Now you are missing the Upper or Lower filters(or both) on your CD/DVD drive.
Try System Restore and here's a Microsoft article on the subject. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

it must be basically a grimy connection. turn the laptop off. Take out the battery and unplug the charger. Take out the two screws on the backside that carry the stress in. (look - this is obtrusive the place the stress is and which 2 screws carry it in.) Pull the stress out approximately an inch. Push it returned in. placed the screws returned in. placed the battery returned in. Plug the charger in. See if the stress works.
