What happens to your driving licence after you accumulate 12 points?
When points tot up to more than 12 over a three year period the result is that the driver is banned. What I cannot find is what happens when the ban ends? Is the licence clear of all points? Please give a reference, preferably the actual Statutory Instrument that details what happens, TIA.

When the ban ends, you have to apply for a new licence using a form D1. Towards the end of the ban you should get a reminder to apply.
Points stay on the licence for four years from the date of conviction. It may be more depending on the offence.
You do not have to retake the driving test unless the courts ordered you to do so or your licence was revoked (there is a difference).

The link below will tell you everything you need to know but in general.
most points stay on the licence for 4 years but count for 3 years.
Some, like drink driving are on there for 11 years but count for 10.
If you are banned on totting up 12 then the 12 will be deemed spent when you finish the ban but will still be on the licence for the normal time.
If under the tooting up procedure you are banned you will get a new endorsement with code TT99. This does not have points but stays on the licence and will show the ban period for 4 years from the date that you got up to 12 - this means new insurers have to declare it for that time and will find cover expensive and difficult to arrange

It depends on where you live. Also the reason you got 12 points eg if you got 3 points for speeding two and a half years ago, then another three points for speeding 6 months ago, then a further 6 points for dangerous driving you will have 12 points and be banned - however in 6 months time the first set of 3 points will expire and you will get your licence back but it will still carry 9 points from the most recent convictions.

If you build up 12 or more penalty points within a period of three years, you’ll be liable to be disqualified under the 'totting-up' system. This is shown on your licence as TT99.
Information on your driving entitlement and endorsements are sent to the courts and police on request.

if the points are for a series of minor offences like runnign a red light, speeding, defects etc then u don't have to retake a test to get back on the road with a full license, its only very serious offences like dangerous driving, drink driving etc that you would have to retake and pass and extended and harder (than the orginal) theory and practical tests
so once your ban is gone?
It's normally for 6 months than a 2nd 12 points in 3 years or something like that will increase to a year ban or something like that

It depends: Points for different offences stay on your licence for different periods of time;
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensi...
And you won't need a retest unless a court orders you to take one.

It's back to driving school. You need to acquire a new license and the procedure isn't just a simple renewal (as you would do with an expired license).

it depends on the state that you live in.
contact your local division of motor vehicles.
they will have the most accurate answer.
