What do you think of this? more 0f Orwell's 1984.?

Communications firms are being asked to record all internet contacts between people as part of a modernisation in UK police surveillance tactics.

The new system would track all e-mails, phone calls and internet use, including visits to social network sites.

It's sad that in this country IE the UK. we do nothing about this. o yes people will moan about it but still do nothing. don't you think it's about time we started to do something about this sort of thing before it's too late.

It reminds me of a quote from a Pastor Martin Nemoller.

In Germany they first came for the Communists,

and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.

Then they came for the Jews,

and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for the trade unionists,

and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Catholics,

and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.

Then they came for me —

and by that time no one was left to speak up.

Is this how we will end up. that not even post's like this would be tolerated. because everyone was too complacent do speak up and do something about this. so what do you think if at all.

Update:

For those that think it's ok. all i can think of right now is a quote from Benjamin Franklin

Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Update 2:

PS i for one will not keep quite. and if it's a crime one day to speak out then so be it.

Update 3:

Ya Hog b i'm thee intigator of this conspiracy, blame me it's ok. i can take it.

It is another step down the total surveilance of the populace path.

Cool Hal - so when they come and install cctv in your home to monitor you and your family you will be ok with that will you. After all, it will be for the "greater good" won't it??

Orwell's book is used almost as a manual by the state nowadays, the sorts of infringements on our liberties would not have been tolerated in 1984, a quarter of a century ago, but there is now a generation of scared, and ill educated people coming through who are too scared to question the powers that be, and too dumbed down to even much realize the implications of all these sorts of laws and initiatives.

We are both committing what will soon be the equivalent of a thought crime, is it a conspiracy, or could I argue that you were the intigator?

Pastor Nemoller's quote is every bit as relevent now, as when he made it as a response to the Nazis, and how they got away with it.

Once again the government comes up with a crazy idea that by spying on everyone the world will be a safer place, because obviously all wrong doers and plotters are going to use all the modern technology to plan, knowing they will be caught by the ever vigilant security agencies.

How F*%king stupid is that idea, seems more like just another way to pass personal information to private companies to hold and mis-use, whilst probably getting large amounts of cash from the government for the work!!!

Hi. I'm offended that any/ all of us can be tracked at all, in so many ways. 1984 and others were a great example of enslaving everyone. I'm so ready to go off the grid, but that could be as difficult as not haveing any thoughts cuz the Govt. insisted we all have micro chips in our heads. My greatest issue is I might have to put up with all of it another 80 years.

When the thought police wanna take over, I'll just stick my Glock 9 mm in my mouth and let them scrape up my brains.

I'm hoping that this is net another moronic 'initiative' that makes headlines to annoy everyone but will soon be quietly binned.

I don't see how it can be done without vast armies of monitors, and where will the money come from to pay them all? We are supposed to be bankrupt.

And while they are monitoring all emails and website activity by the likes of you and me, terrorist and criminal activity will go undetected. I shall make a point of posting as many insults about Gordie and co as I can!

I remember everyone saying about 1984 that it could never happen...but it did. People who claim that the government is taking away our right in order to protect us are idiots! There was a very true saying, something like "Anyone who gives up their rights in the name of security, deserves neither." Unfortunately people do not really want freedom because this includes being responsible for their own lives. If they fall down, it is someone else's fault etc etc.

and he got took and imprisoned ( Niemoller )

paranoia , insecurity , unease , is already rife here so be careful where you speak out , underground movements are formed and they fear of speaking out against the same forces pushing for more laws to eavesdrop and worse . Be careful , there are many untold stories besides the well publicised " we wanted to infiltrate plane stupid "

EDIT dont scream ask on yahoo questions how to make a software that visits randomly chosen sites randomly .

It worries me that this labour government have introduced so many ways of monitoring our behaviour and I sometimes wonder whether there is an element of '1984' on the horizon.

What are they going to do with my input on social network sites? They can visit them anyway. I'm not doing anything wrong on my computer, so I don't see it being a problem for me. Like cool hal says if it stops terrorists or paedophiles then so be it.

Exbrit- Are you doing something active to stop it then? I hope you aren't just sitting on your @rse and calling people like myself idiots.

If it assists in tracking terrorists, paedophiles, drug smugglers , people smugglers and other criminals then good.

If that means that someone stores my updates on facebook then so be it. Or keeps on file arranging football practice or a night out or whatever fine.

If the choice is between monitoring my email and phone traffic and protecting my families life - watch away.

EDIT - Ansal A - there is a huge difference between monitoring what happens on the internet and what happens in my home. How many criminals are apprehended and how many children are safe because of these techiniques? Would you object to a camera being placed in a convicted peadophiles home? I wouldn't
