I live in Ky also. I have alot of flower beds. The majority of the plants I have in them that bloom in the summer are a mix of daylilies, hostas, mini rose bushes and annuals in my front yard and the back garden mostly consists of regular size rose bushes and climbing roses. all do very well for me.

Call your county agricultural extension agent and find what "hardiness zone" applies. The agent will also be able to supply you with a list of perennial (vs. annual) plants that will do well and last for years.

Roses, and Rose Bush are really beautiful and once you plant them and get then started up they grow and blossom every year on their own.
Jasmine flower's also grow on their own when you plant them. The thing about both of the Jasmine and the rose, is that they smell up your whole yard with a nice sent that everyone around you will love. Trust me I know I have my own Jasmine Bush and it smells really good.

Hybrid daylilies are lovely. Even those that aren't everblooming have nice foliage. Care is easy, removing brown stems and foliage once a year.
