why does the serpentine belt keep shredding on my 1996 chrysler town and country?

I have had my van for 4 years now. It just hit 200,000 miles about 4 weeks ago. Within 50 miles my serpentine belt broke into shreds. we replaced it but still heard noises. My husband replaced it and removed a guard near it thinking that the guard was bumping the water pump and it was cutting it. It drove fine for a few weeks, then today it shredded while I was driving.

Remove the belt and manually turn each pulley by hand. This will tell you if one of them is sticking, grinding, or wobbling. Also make sure the pulleys all line up straight with each other. Make sure one pulley isn't sticking out further than the rest.

  • could be a bad idle tensioner, or maybe some other type of pulley. Maybe you have a bad water pump, somehow wearing the belt down quick, or something. Check the tension of the belt when cold. That might show or eliminate something wrong with the tensioner.

Check the belt to be sure it is running true on all pulleys, if the belt is "walking" on a pulley, especially one that is ribbed, it will be more apt to destroy itself.

And by all means check the tension idler to be sure it is keeping the proper tension on the belt and is moving freely as it should.
