Is it legal to have backyard chickens in California?

I'd like to have a few chickens in my backyard when I move back to California in a few months... but is it legal to have them?

Update:

The problem is I'll be living in LA...

forgot to add that. & if it is legal, I'm worried about the complaints (not from noise), but simply because LA neighbours will probably think it's weird and complain anyway.

It's just, I'm moving away from a farm in Brazil that I've been living on for 6 months, and I really like the animal lifestyle. Chickens are fun to raise, and their eggs taste and look so much better than from the store! (I wouldn't be killing them).

    its not illegal state-wise

but your county or city may have a ban on them

also they can use existing laws such as noise ordinances to prevent you from having them

its all in your local government, though

which is a good thing, because even if it was illegal (which i highly doubt) one person has the ability to change the law in their county. if it is illegal start going to city hall meetings and telling the city counsel about your request

but honestly i would just get the chickens and see if anyone complains. im sure nobody will

Source(s): i've lived in cali my whole life, and i can think of a few families who had backyard chickens. in the suburbs, btw

You'll have to look at local livestock zoning laws in the area in which your moving to. If the zoning laws allow for livestock then yes,if your using them as livestock, meaning you intend on have several chickens specifically for egg production or slaughter. If your intending on having one or two chickens as pets, then zoning laws wouldn't necessarily apply. Contact the county extension office for the county to which you'll be moving, they should be able to answer any questions you have concerning the local zoning laws.

Make sure that you don't have any roosters, they will crow and your neighbors will get mad.
