Moving to Hawai'i, taking minimal stuff, but wanting to ship some stuff separately..?
Anyone have any idea how much it is to ship things from the mainland to Oahu, like a small microwave or a light box like a 1ft cube sized box of clothes? Those are just samples just to get an idea of the cost to ship various sizes/weights of things. I cannot find this info online and I am wondering what things would be worth shipping rather than buying new in Hawai'i. I understand (have visited there and have researched this move as much as possible) that products cost more there, but I know that shipping packages can be costly. I do not have enough that I would want to pay for a large container that many people use to ship pretty much their entire belongings from their house... just a few boxes of random things like that.
Any other info if you have made the mainland-->Hawai'i move, please let me know!!! Any info is appreciated! As I mentioned, I have visited and I have family who has lived there before, any tips for things like this are much appreciated. Thank you!
I am not asking advice on whether I should ship those things..just an idea of the price for things like that..the weight/size of those types of items and how much it is to ship it. I'm most likely going to sell my microwave and find one cheap there.. just wanted an idea of how much it'd be to ship items of similar size/weight to that.
Thank you all for your help though.

Leave the microwave behind. Leave virtually all heavy items behind. they will cost you as much to ship as they will to buy.
Craigs list is huge in HI. Everything is recycled. My sister recently moved to Maui and except for what fit in the back of her pick-up truck (she shipped it and it has a camper shell on the back), she sold before leaving. You will need the cash when you get there. She got almost everything she needed on craigs list including her cat.
For shopping, find the small consignment shops. Killer deals.

Instead of shipping your microwave, I would suggest you just pick up one when you get here. The cost will be about the same as mailing it to yourself and you'll be able to get one brand new. As for your clothes, I would suggest you ship it to yourself (via a friend or relative's address) via USPS parcel post. It's going to take a long time to get to you since it will come via ground across the mainland and then by barge across the water but it's the cheapest way. Fedex and UPS will also send you boxes like that but the cost will be much more and the shipping time will be about the same. Of course, you can always just buy new clothes when you get here too as most "transplants" find themselves wearing totally different clothes once they get here as they find that comfort is more important than style here in the islands.
Hope that helps you......good luck!

Please realise if you sell your stuff such as microwaves cheap on craigslist, you can buy a new one once your there from craigslist and save money! Anything you can replace, pots n pans, cooking vessells, dishes, towels, sheets, books, furniture, you can sell and replace so much cheaper. Shipping is very expensive, very very expensive. It cost me 25.00 to send out baby clothes, just outfits to my daughter out of state!!
Look at what you can take with you, right now airlines are dying for customers, find some that are offering second bag free, or find out how much it is, and take things that will fit into those demensions with you. Its so expensive to live there, dont waste money bringing stuff with you, sell and save and buy once there!! There will be plenty of garage sales to help you find new things, itll give you something to do while your there!!
Source(s): Yes buying new is expensive there, sign up for target and other stores you frequent, contact for shipping to HI and see if the free shipping includes the islands, it might, then your paying online prices with free shipping. Stores send out emails all the time for specials, I signed up with Kohls, Target, Sears, Walmart. KMart. Youd have to call each one about shipping to HI if free is offered to verify, this will help alot. - Hawaii HomeLv 61 decade ago
The postal service has a calculator online

"Ground" delivery is actually by ship and may save a few dollars, not a lot.
