Polynomial with a complex answer?

Hi.

How do I find the solution to:

x^2 + 4x +13 = 0

Please walk me through how to solve an equation like this.

    Hi.

    You can complete the square or use the modified quadratic formula:

    x = (-b +- sqrt(-1)*(4ac- bsquared))/2a

    Here you have: (-4 +- sqrt(-1*4*13 - 16))/2 = (-4 +- sqrt(-1 * 36))/2

    - 4 + - sqrt(-36)/2 = (- 4 +- 6i)/2 = -2 +3i or -2 - 3i.

    =(x+2)^2+9 = (x+2+3i)(x+2-3i)=0--->x =-2-3i, -2+3i
