How often do dogs go into heat and is it exact?

My dog had her first heat Oct. 2008 and not another yet, also if she does go into heat and then got PG instantly would her heat stop right away so I wouldn't even notice that her heat started?, or would the cycle continue?

And Please I don't want to hear anything about having her fixed!

Update:

Some great answers. The reason I ask, she's about 15 mo. old ShihTzu. I have my suspicions that she came from a puppy mill and wish I had proof, so breeding is something I would not do, we got her @ 5 wks old for a companion for our 4 yr. old male Pekingese and also wanted to have one litter before having them both fixed. Knowing that the pups would be half breeds we would also keep one and friends want the others, but if there are not enough, too bad, one time is it. I hear a lot of just "get them fixed and adopt", but would you have your tubes tied and adopt instead of having a child of your own? I asked the question to begin with, because it is her heat time and I found them sitting on the couch together and he was supporting his willie quite well, and like I said I have not seen any blood like I did with her first heat, but as far as I know he has not mounted her. Thanks for your answers, I hope to hear more good info.

dogs usually go into heat every six to eight months, it's not a guarantee that they will get PG on the first time when they mate with a dog, it may take a few times. when she first goes into heat again, she will not want to mate until the downside of her heat, like the last two days

Depends on your breed of dog. There are some that only cycle once a year.

Those that do cycle twice a year don't always follow through with a strict 6 monthly regimen. Some go 7 months some will go 5 months.

No the heat cycle does not stop once pregnant. It continues on the full time. Most but not all don't bleed the whole cycle either.

Can I ask why you don't want to have her fixed?

It happens twice a year, maybe not EXACTLY six months all the time, but pretty close. yes the heat would stop, maybe not instantly. I will not tell you you should get your dog fixed but you shouldn't breed her if you don't know even this basic information on your dog's health and cycles. You need to do a lot more research before you even think about bringing a litter of pups into the world, especially when most of those precious creatures will probably end up abused or put down.

Dogs cycle every 6 months, Your dog is due to cycle again in April. They are in heat for approx 21 days, a week coming, a week standing and a week going out. "Standing" means receptive to the male and able to breed. Breeding early in the cycle produces more males, it has to do the the acidity in the reproductive tract. Likewise, breeding later, will produce more females. If that's what your wanting to do, wait until your dog is 2 years old make sure you have all the tests done for genetic diseases of the eye, hip, also you should know if your dog carries any blood abnormalities, such as Von Wildebrand (sp) disease.

If you dog gets bred, she will not immediately go out of heat, she will continue to be able to be bred by other males.

Do the responsible thing, if she isn't purebred, have her spayed.

Every dog is different as far as heat cycles. Because she's only had one heat its hard to say when the next one will be. Let nature take its course and it will come. Dogs heat cycles can range from every 4 months to once a year. If you are at all concerned consult your vet.

would not have bred interior the 1st place in case you probably did not comprehend this formerly hand. HAVE HER SPAYED. If she cycles on a common 6 month cycle then she will bypass into warmth 4 months after the delivery of her doggies, meaning between now and sometime in could. call your vet day after today and make the appointment. you have not have been given any company breeding in case you do not even comprehend the basics. OFA? CERF? vWD? Do you even comprehend what those advise?

roughly every 6 months. some dogs have silent heats and no it won't stop instantly if she becomes pregnant. dogs with silent heats are at a higher risk for pyometra. please spay yours. you don't need to be breeding.
