can you make good money having a cleaning business?

I am just in the start of my new cleaning business (houses/offices), can you really make good money doing this? I have phoned some local companies that are cleaning homes from $18/hr to $20/hr, and they are doing a min of 3hrs to a house... To me thats not a hole alot of $$$, can you make more $$ cleaning offices than homes?

Please help

    Hi, Tim!

I clean small offices and make a great living. I've put together a Squidoo lens and blog with tons of tips, resources and information on all kinds of cleaning businesses.

But let's look at your question and do some numbers. Take your example of residential cleaning at $20/hour, 3 hour min. That's $60 per residence. You could do two a day, 5 days a week, that's $600 a week X 52 is $31,200 a year. Not bad. But, I would advise not to charge by the hour. Once you get efficient with your cleaning techniques, you will be done before the 3 hours are up. You will have to 'fake' clean or something because if your customer finds out you only are spending 2 hours but charging for three, you're going to loss a customer. (I had a friend have this happen).

With small offices, one generally charges by the sq ft for a general, routine daily or weekly cleaning. Let's be conservative and say you charge $0.25 per sq ft. A 300 sq ft office (that's 3 rooms that are 10x10) would be $75. That's $375 a week, $19, 500 a year. But that's only one office. You should be able to do two or three a day (or night). And that doesn't include occasional 'extra' services-window washing, carpet cleaning or floor waxing/buffing, for example.

So, yes, it can be a very profitable business, with a low start up cost and pretty fast to get going.

You will make good money off of a business like that. You just have to do a lot of researching for competitors, businesses who needs a cleaning company. Also think, what can you offer that no one else is. You make a lot more money cleaning offices, than homes because they give you contracts. But you need the homes too for the odd jobs, and experience.

    Good luck!

try offering a free cleaning to one person in a nice neighborhood. If they like your work, ask for referrals. Referrals are the BEST and coincidentally the CHEAPEST way to get new clients!
