Applying for a job through Craigslist?

I am relocating to a different area of the state and am having a hard time finding a job. I recently started looking at the postings on Craigslist. I found an HR position that sounded interesting, and sent the email address listed as the contact my resume. She emailed back and asked me to apply to this website: http://thecareercenteronline.com/joboffer/register...

I have never job searched like this before, and am just a little concerned that it might be a scam. I can't find any information regarding this "career center online" or "power applications"....do you think this is legitimate or possibly an identity scam?

Thanks for any advice!!!

Craigslist is actually a good way to go but you must be VERY careful. The link you posted is a scam.

The other answers are right...there are lots of scams. Weeding them out can be difficult.

I'm using Craigslist for job searching as well. Believe it or not I've had better luck there than anywhere else.

    Some tips...

    1) Don't ever contact the job poster if...

    - Company name is not listed.

    - No other contact info is shown, like an email address or phone number.

    - Email address listed is for a free email account like Yahoo, Hotmail, or Gmail.

    2) Don't ever fill out a job application that is not on the company's official website or the official website of the employment agency.

    3) If the job application site continually tries to trick you into clicking on "off topic" links (like for a home biz) before showing you any info about a position it is a scam.

    4) Do post your resume in the resume section of the city you will be relocating to.

    - Make it a brief and to the point paragraph highlighting your skills and accomplishments. I did this and had an honest employer schedule an interview less than 24 hours later.

    - You will get quite a few emails from scammers so beware but they're fairly easy to weed out.

    - Don't apply at any website where you're sent to a generalized job search website that will charge the job seeker to view and apply for jobs.

    - When you get responses that appear legit, use the part of their email address after the "@" to look up their official site. If there isn't one, don't bother with them...it's probably a scam.

    Good luck!

OMG I had this same problem. I was telling my boyfriend that I was looking at craigslist for jobs and he yelled at me like, "Don't! They're just trying to get your information! Haven't you heard about the craigslist killer?!!" LoL

Anyway, I asked the job I was interested in if I could get the address and just stop by and apply...If they don't do it like that, I would be wary. (Or you know, some other type of ID so you can find out for yourself if it's legit)

I've personally never heard of career center online or power applications...But that's just me...

Well good luck to you, and remember, it's okay to be stingy with your info. Unless this is a work from home type thing, there's a real employer at a real building with a real phone number so if you can't find any of that then there's no reason to give up your info.

CL has thousands of competitors like anywhere else, all looking for the same job. It's never easy no matter what job it is or where you look for it. I've been trying to find work on CL for 5 months and while I got a few interviews, no job. Also, never give out your SSN until a company is ready to actually hire you. Be careful and use common sense.

There are legit job listings on craigslist, but if you can't find any information about the company through a web search, there's a high likelihood that it's a scam.

You can check out the job site on Alexa.com or who.is and see how long they have been up and how much traffic they get.

It will give you some confidence about them.
