What type of off-Road motorcyble should I get?
I want to learn how to ride a real Motorcycle but I'm being told that I should learn with an off-road bike first.
I know my physical will be a factor so here it is
Height: 5' 10"
Weight: 260
So with that said what type should I get to.
Also I believe that I should go with something like a 250 or something but I don't know for sure. Thanks

riding off-road is not necesarry, i suggest starting out with a used dual-sport 250cc bike such as a kawasaki klr or klx or a super sherpa, or something honda, yamaha or suzuki equivelent. they are perfectly street legal and perform well off-road too, i say used because most begginers will drop their bikes at first and have small crashes, however i have heard that riding on dirt will give you a sense of what it is like to lose traction on the street and be able to ride on slippery terrain, if you go to a basic rider course the main requirement is that you are able to keep your balance on a bicycle. buying an off-road stricly motorcycle to work your way up to street motorcycles is going to be a waste of time and money (unless the cost doesnt matter) if you have your mind set on getting an off-road bike get one that is trail oriented rather than motorcross or racing oriented

People that grew up on dirt bikes certainly have an advantage when moving to the street, but I don't necessarily think you have to learn on a dirt bike if road riding is your real interest. Dave mentioned a dual sport and that would be a good idea. They will be taller than most street bikes but much lighter. You could also just start on a street bike in the 500 to 650 range, just make sure it is only a 2 cylinder, don't start on an in-line 4. A 500 Ninja or Suzuki SV650 would both be good choices.
