    TOGETHER WE ONCE WERE-

    Together we once were,

    as happy as could be,

    But luck soon fades,

    including you and me.

I wish It couldn't be so,

    although I know it's true,

And that the last thing that I said,

    was ''I love you''.

    The lives we shared together,

    was so connected,

    Now the hearts are fading,

    and will soon be detected.

There will never be any more rats,

As soft and as sweet as you,

And I wish I had another chance,

To say much more than ''I love you''.

    As time pushes us apart,

    I will never forget,

The time we once had together,

    Is now in debt.

When I see the sun setting,

    I think of you,

    But It's not the same,

    As me being with you.

I know our time is up,

And I know It was short,

    It's what nature does,

But I still wish for more.

I can see the sunlight fading,

    Right before my eyes,

    And when that time happens,

It's time to say Good bye!

Hope you liked it. I made this for my guinea pig Pip that died as well. It really hits the spot to make you cry. :)

I really like anything by Edna St. Vincent Millay. And the song sung at my grandmother's funeral....it's an old Shaker hymn I believe.... 'Tis a gift to be simple 'tis a gift to be free 'tis a gift to come down where we ought to be, and when we find ourselves in the place just right, shall be in the valley of love and delight" To me instead of being sad that she was gone, it made me feel lighter, that she was in peace finally and where she needed to be. We also read many Emily Dickinson poems, which were her favorites. But you should really look up some Edna St. Vincent Millay. Not So Far As the Forest. Hope this helps. I'm off to bed or I'd find a few for you.

    You go to the petshop,

    And step through the door,

You leave the cash in the car,

    Because you've done this before.

    You step into the aisle,

    And to no one's surprise,

You fall in love with those cute beady eyes.

    But the promises you made,

And the vows that you took,

You'll stand by them this time,

    You'll do nothing but look.

    "Oh quickly come help me!",

    You excitedly yell,

You tap your hand on the assistance bell.

    In no time at all,

    The clerk comes your way,

    You point at the rat,

    "That one," you say.

"I'm sure he won't make it,"

    "I'm sure he will die,"

"They'll feed him to the snakes or abuse him!"

    you cry.

    By now you're quite sure,

You don't take him, he's dead,

    And if he's adopted,

    They'll abuse him instead.

    Now home with a rattie,

    You've just started the fun,

    The young are so curious,

    They sniff and they run,

    Unpredictable and busy,

    Always on their feet,

There's not much that can stop them,

    Except maybe a treat.

Though the fun times not over,

    Much bigger they'll get,

    More sleeping, less running,

    And a shoulder? You bet!

    They ride in high style,

When they're close and they're dear,

They share all your meals and snuffle your ear.

    There's no time for cages,

    Just clean simple fun,

There's much time for napping as well as to run.

    But age is on-coming,

    And so is the day,

When creaky old bones make it tougher to play.

    But, as they grow older,

    They're patient and sweet,

A scratch on the ear is as good as a treat.

    You cuddle each day,

Though the days go too fast,

And you hope with your heart that each ones not the last,

    And then the day comes,

    When you must say goodbye,

    You stroke coarse old fur,

And you try not to cry.

    Your friend has departed,

    It's not possibly true,

But the person in pain is really just you.

    Then memories return,

    And you hear yourself sigh,

A smile creeps back and your tears start to dry.

    You remember the fun,

That the two of you had,

And even if he's gone it doesn't hurt quite as bad.

    Time flies by,

    And with it the sad,

But you never forget the fun times you had.

    Then one day traveling home,

    You make a quick stop,

    It's just a quick peek...

    and

My Rat was sleeping in his nest.

His eyes were closed, he needed rest.

But I still could not resist!

Would he mind if he were kissed?

I picked him up and kissed his head,

And then I put him back to bed.

and don't forget! Rats are actually angels, who as we all know, can't breathe earth air. They can only hold their breath for so long, which is why they're here such a short time.

Your favorite spots are vacant now.

No eager squeaks to greet me,

No scratchy little paws to run

    Ecstatically to meet me.

    No sniffing, whiskered little noses

Will say it's time for feeding --

    I've put away your bowls

And all the things you won't be needing.

But I will miss you, little friends,

    For I could never measure

The happiness you brought to me,

    The comfort and the pleasure.

And since God put you here to share

    In earthly joy and sorrow,

I'm sure there'll be a place for you

    In Heaven's bright tomorrow.

Your memories will still live on

    and wait for me.
