As Vanessa said, if you're going through a wireless router, you're going to lose connection speed, regardless of how close your console is to the router.
The simple process of bit-packaging, encrypting, sending, decrypting, unpackaging, re-packaging, re-encrypting, sending through the air waves, re-decrypting, re-unpackaging, then converting is enough to really hamper a connection. By removing the router from the loop, you can avoid a lot of those unnecessary steps.

This is a known problem and Microsoft is presumably doing a patch. this happens to me, everyone i know at some point. Its just a minor inconvenience for the time being. The unable to join thing can be solved if you do a power cycle on you modem and router if you have one. Do a quick search for how to do it. And that should fix your problems. If it persists call Xbox at 1-800-4MY-XBOX, Its free.

It's probably not your xbox...it's either the server (which you can;t do anything about) or your home network. If you're running your connection through a router (wireless or hard-wired) they tend to reduce your signal strength and will lead to getting dropped from parties or lagged gameplay. Try hard-wiring your XBox directly into the cable modem and see if that helps.
