Pregnant Briton faces execution?
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/4/20090502/twl-pregnant-b...
I can't believe this. This poor woman has clearly been raped in prison and now could be shot, besides being totally wrong is this an act of war as she has no legal representation and they deliberately moved the trial date after the announcement of when a lawyer could get to her? Can't our govenment step in and protect her as a victim of rape?

she knew the risks she was taking when she decided to smuggle drugs.
Did she stop to think about the misery drugs cause in the UK or was she simply motivated by greed?

This was in the news months ago, she came to England from one of the African countries, possibly Nigeria and from what i can remember has been in trouble before with drugs. I sincerely doubt that they would execute a pregnant woman after all they then would be guilty of the murder of an unborn child, i cannot see any judge in the world allowing that to happen. She should be given a fair trial after the baby is born but as far as i am concerned if you break the laws of a country you are living/working/visiting in then you have to accept responsibility for your own actions. There's no point in making laws and allowing offenders to get off without the penalty or you'll end up with what we now have in the UK unfortunately.

What?!! Carrying a kilo and a half of drugs into the country carried the death sentence!! End of story!!
Getting pregnant came afterwords.
What do you suggest a life sentence in the same prison conditions?
Or are you suggesting she is pardoned and released? Poor girl!!! NOT!!!

I read this twice. The way you layer longer story-related prose is admirable, and something I have much trouble with. You make it seem effortless, natural, but all of us who write know the opposite is true. I often measure the effectiveness of a piece by the number of TD's........Jealousy rears it's green head. Kudos to you, Mr Carney.

You say poor woman but she's been accused of trying to smuggle drugs out of the country. i know she's Innocent right, like everyone else that gets caught. and why would a young girl like that go to Laos, as for rape well even Reprieve and the government are not saying that. only you. but going back to the drug problem by people like this all the drugs that come into this country come all by themselves. no someone smuggling drugs gets no sympathy from me. they coarse far to much misery in this country so those that want to try and get caught. don't deserve help' i see like yourself one or two are showing great sympathy for her now. but think a moment what if she had gotten through with these drugs and someone close to you had taken them and died and you found out this woman had smuggled them into this country. would you have any symathy for her then. no

She is in Laos, not Britain. Laos is not a human rights picnic site. You go such countries you take your chances. People from the civilised west would do well to remember that. It's sad but she can only rely on the decisions of the Laotian state.

This is like a horrible movie plot. She was either forced into carrying the drugs or the corrupt cops there planted them on her. The whole thing screams "set-up"! There should be intervention by military force and should have been done back in August.

Killing a pregnant woman sounds a bit extreme. If she has to die can't they wait til after the child is born?

Let this be a warning to all people to not go to any country with such laws. We should petition our government to stop any aid going to these countries. When we send them money for any purpose we are feeding our enemies.
