Why do so many people collectively switch the i and e and leave off the s in addressing atheists?

Some people don't know how to spell. Others just do it deliberately to get a reaction out of it.

The I and E thing kind of makes sense pronunciation wise as it's ay-theeeee- ist. The S dumbfounds me.

The ones who do are shall we say, not intellectual giants. They're probably the same people who put an apostraphe on every plural s and dont know the difference between then and than.
