Yes Chipmunks are very smart animals, but they can get very scared also. I use to have a whole lot of squirrels and Chipmunks in my yard. What I did to get rid of them is I got two scare crows and put them in my front and back yard, big or small scare crows work fine, you can also put a lot of little scare crows around your yard. I also set traps around my yard to keep them away and it worked. They think that the scare crow is a real person so they run away. It has been nearly more then 2 months and they still haven't came back.
But I'm really glad there gone, they kept on eating my dads nice green grass.

You can put out poison bait traps, which is inhumane and dangerous for other animals and children.
You can set mechanical traps and relocate the captured chipmunks, but more will come.
You can get a cat, which can be gory, but effective. Good luck!

Encourage cats.
Feral cats and hawks keep our population manageable.
Also, I know one person who was able to trap them all out, but it's a lot of work.
