Just got my brakes done... Did I get ripped off?
I just got my brakes done for my car, my car is a '96 Oldsmobile Delta 88 with about 131,000 miles on it.
These are the things that got replaced:
Back--> drums, shoes, cylinder
Front--> pads, rotors, and caliper on right side
I paid 470 bucks for this... Did I get ripped off?

Call a local parts store and ask for a price on all these parts for your car. You'll see that about half your bill was for parts. Considering most shops charge over $60/hour for labor and they did about 3 to 3.5 hours of work, I'd say that you were treated fairly. I know that that is a good chunk of change all at once, but you should have peace of mind for at least 40,000 miles, at least with your brakes.

No rip-off. That's about right.
Keep in mind that cylinders and calipers are not the usual wear items and therefore going forward should not need to be replaced as often as shoes and pads.
Your next brake jobs may only include shoes and pads. Drums and rotors may need to be machined a few times before they are replaced.

That's about right i work for a dealer and brake shoes can run upwards of 100$ then we charge $40 a wheel to turn the rotor and replace the shoes per side. Then a bleeding the brake system is $79.95. That's not including the wheel cylinders or hardware kit so to me it sounds like you got a reasonable deal compared to what we charge.

You'll really be upset when you find out the brands of all parts used and where they were made. Brake shops are famous for sticking people with off-shore rotors and brake drums from China and Taiwan which are made of the poorest quality cast iron you ever could imagine. Then they have the audacity of soaking the living tar out of people for worthless parts when if you had known, could have gone first class with American or British made parts

That's a significant amount of parts and labor. $470 is a decent price, as long as it was done right.

That's a little pricey, but I wouldn't say you got ripped off. The mechanic has to make a living, too. Plus, brakes are pretty important!
