Explain baseball stats to me?
Okay, so. I'm a girl, and I love baseball. I grew up a Yankee fan, because that's what my family raised me as, lol. I'm now a huge Mets fan too (omg, I went to a Mets game last week and during warm up I got Jose Reyes to smile & wave at me...lmao :D).
I understand the basics. I understand how the score is kept, outs, balls, walks, strikes, etc. But I don't understand the stats!
Like, batting averages...how are they calculated? And all the other numbers like that... can someone please explain? :)

Batting Average = hits / at bats
Slugging Percentage = total bases / at bats
On base Percentage = hits plus walks / at bats plus walks
Earned Run Average = earned runs allowed*9 / innings pitched
WHIP = walks plus hits/ inning pitched

Billy Wagner, 1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K means... -1 inning pitched -2 hits given up (a hit is when someone safely reaches base; walks, fielder's choices, and when a player reaches because of an error are not considered hits) -2 earned runs -0 people walked -1 strikeout btw-i think it's awesome that you're trying to learn more about baseball because it's pretty much the best sport ever :D if you have any questions, feel free to message me any time

BATTING AVERAGE CALCULATION.....
Add up your hits.
Step2
Add up your at bats. At bats include every time you hit safely or hit into an out, including a strike out. Getting on base by an error or fielder's choice is considered an out. A Sacrifice, walk or hit by pitch is not counted as a hit or an out.
Step3
Divide your hits by your at bats.
Step4
Round off the number to the third decimal place. For example, .33051 is .331.

Well batting average is simple. You go up to bat 10 times, get 3 hits, average is .300.
Hits divided by At Bats. (Round the number to three places after the decimal point).

average: the average is simple to calculate. all you need to do is this: hits divided by at-bats (round if you have to. so for jim thome last year
123 hits / 504 at-bats = .245 after rounding.
