Brahmins of Bengal, Orissa, Parts of Bihar , Assam and Kashmir eat non - vegetarian.

South Indian Brahmins , a majority of them, are vegetarians.

Brahmins of Gujarat, Rajsthan, maharastra, Karnataka who are historically influenced by Jainism are strict followers of vegetarianism.

Arya samajis in western UP,Haryana, Punjab are strictly vegetarians.

Arya Vaishyas as a caste are also vegetarians.

Exceptions are some adventurous youth from all these pure vegetarian groups eat non - vegetarian items.

gujarat has more vegetarians then most other states.

interestingly it is the only place where the humble omelette is a very popular dish and there are numerous carts and omelette centers selling omelettes of dozen different varieties, which remain heavily crowded every evening. probably the limit to crossing vegetarianism.

besides jains wherever they are though mostly in gujrat,rajasthan, madhya pradesh , and of course all over india are always vegetarians.

by the way brahmins are not always vegetarians,but it is mostly geographical regions in which they are likely to be nonvegetarian or vegetarian.

some of the best nonveg cuisines are known to have been brahminical in origin.

for example those living in hills ,extreme cold climates ,coastal regions are not necessarily vegetarian.

brahmins doing 'panditai' that is priestly duties are likely to be always vegetarian, but those in other professions are not likely to be , though this observation of mine may not be very accurate.

Gujrat might have more vegetarians. Among Hindu castes Brahmins and Vyshyas are vegetarians. Jains (seperate religion????) are also vegetarians.

HARYANA is the state everyone ignoring here which include 97% of people are vegetarian and percentage wise it may be the number one place on earth where almost everyone is vegetarian except a few .

Gujarat has the most number of vegetarians. Despite having the longest coastline in the Country (1600 km approx), most of the Gujaratis are vegetarians. The reason being the influence of Jainism in Gujarat in the ancient times. And Gujaratis, being the people who adhere to their principles strictly, have still maintained the culture of vegetarianism in the state.
