Setting up a new tank with a mature filter.?

I just set up a new 10 gallon tank that I will use for shell dwelling cichlids. I took the filter from my 5 gallon tank that has been running for over a year and hooked it on the 10 gallon. The new 10 gal filter is also running. How long would this take to cycle the new tank? Will choose best answer.

Update:

Sorry I didn't mention it, I added about 4 gallons of water from the 5 g tank. I also put in a big bag of the gravel from the 5 g as well.

well there's no Bactria in the gravel bed or in the other filter...i would go with about 2-3 weeks as the old filter will help to seed...it will still take time to mature..

I agree with Graham, if you really want to speed up your cycle you should also use the substrate and water from the 5 gallon tank. This should cut your cycle down by about 50-60%. HTH. Good luck.

It should be a couple of weeks for it all to kick in properly, but I'd question the choice of fish in such a small tank.

I'd say about two weeks tops. have fun with the new tank.
