Any tips for closing a conversation?

Lets say you've been talking with someone a while, but you've run out of things to say, either on the phone or in person, how do you close the conversation without making the other person feel bad or rejected?

Just say "Well just wanted to stop in and see how you were doing, and it's good to know you are doing well. I will talk to you soon." Or something along those lines.
