Freedom of Speech and Expression or Freedom to Abuse?
So far it would appear that freedom means a more self centered approach with a comment about being free to say what you like. So the question is growing in the direction of is reporting a lie or unconfirmed fact freedom of speech and expression or Freedom to abuse?
Well contrary to in “What do you mean by freedom?” here there is talk of freedom. Learn about the first amendment! I am not American better you expand thinking beyond the USA. However doesn’t cover the deliberate misleading of the people by misrepresenting the facts to gain a larger share of the media income and hiding behind freedom of the press and expression. I agree all people have the right to express what they think, feel and believe with the caveat that it must an honest expression. To state simply that the freedom of speech is to say what you like doesn’t cut it, surely malicious misrepresentation is abuse. Although I like the start of what Mut says I find his claim that the courts can deal misrepresentation ignores that in many countries only the wealthy can afford redress. I have witnessed a requirement for least $50000.00 up front before seeing the beak. Even if you win mud sticks and the damage is already done. So what is freedom and how do you protect it from misuse?

"Freedom of Speech" is the government not infringing on your right to express your opinions and beliefs. It does not mean you can make false accusations against someone else. You can state your opinion about that person, but not accuse them of a crime you know they did not commit. This is called "false accusations", and can get the person in legal trouble.

Freedom of speech is just that. The freedom to say what ever you like. Now if you are talking about the medias right to say what ever it would like I would somewhat agree with you. It is both sides of the media that is wrong. They don't follow any ethical journalism standards at all. They have the opportunity to influence large audiences. We all have the right to our own opinion and beliefs, that shouldn't be taken for granted for.

Take a law class and learn about the 1st Amendment. Some speech is protected, but not all. Viewpoints are generally protected, public forums can limit some speech, slander and libel aren't protected unless they are against a public official, etc.
