Which type of dog is seen the most?
Which type of dogs are found in shelters? My brother in law went there looking a dog that stays small but all the dogs were large breeds. Why are small dogs hard to get in animal shelters such as Chihuahuas, toy poodles, etc.

Because more people dump large dogs. Because they "got too big". Because an untrained young big dog is more trouble than a little one. Because they're no longer "cute".

I think it depends also on what area of the country you are in. I am in Northern California and the shelters are chock full of pit mixes and chi mixes. I check frequently for labs, but they don't show up as often. tons and tons of pits and chis though!
Try finding a breed rescue in your area, or one that specializes in small breeds. I am sure you could find a nice small breed if you open your search just a bit more. Try petfinder.com as well.

around my part of Arkansas, it is larger mixed breeds. When I was looking for a smaller dog, I never found one.
