Can ATM/debit card from US bank work in Vietnam?

I have Chase debit card which is a Master Card. Is this possible to withdraw money from my checking account using this card while I travel in Vietnam ? Do I need to set up something with the bank for it to work ?

I have heard that cash is the most convenient way when traveling in Vietnam but I am not comfortable carrying all my money in cash for the whole trip.

Are there any advice on the money issue ? I am really worry that somehow I will stuck there without any access to my money.

I use my card once a week for months at a time when I am living here. It is expensive, I get charged $5 from my bank at home plus 1% by the Vietnamese bank. However, the only problems are that sometimes the internet in this country goes down. The ATM will not give you money if it can't access the internet. Another problem is that the banks where I live will only give me 2 or 3 million VND per transaction. Agribank will give 5 million but my card never works at their ATMs.

Also, merchants in the larger cities will accept "plastic", but they will charge 3% more to cover the bank fees.

It would be a good idea to call the customer service number on the back of your card to let them know you will be travelling. It will eliminate any "suspicious activity" stoppage of your card.

Sure you can; however, it is insecure and it is difficult for you to claim your spending. Try to use your card in some good bank . Or the best way is to have an account of HSBC and Citibank. It works well in Vietnam. If you live in Ho chi Minh city try to contact this: http://www.hsbc.com.vn/1/2/
