Personally and professionally, I believe the boot camp alternate sentencing is an excellent tool for teens. If you look at the sentencing structure, it is for non violent first time offenders. It is strictly a voluntary program which the offender can drop out anytime he feels it is not right for him.
The program is going to give mental structure and discipline to someone still in the formative years and if accepted and followed, will greatly reduce the likelyhood of the teen re-offending later. It is a turning point in a young life that has a definite advantage in reducing recidivism.
Following five years after "graduation" of the Ohio boot camp training, 85% of the teens making it through the system have not committed further crimes again.
I hope this helps and you can find it useful

To broad a question for a simple answer. In my opinion it depends on the age and severity of the crime. Younger offenders and property crimes, OK. Older offenders, say 16 and any violent crime against a person lock them up and throw away the key. I don't believe in second chances for anyone over 16 who would severely injure someone. They should without exception be treated as adults. I wouldn't mind seeing the age reduced to 14 either.

Bad idea.
Most criminals are not suited for the military when the feel gooders have removed the types of training that made them into soldiers.
The fine people joining and fighting now should not have the added risks and problems of criminals who dont want to be there.
Its' pathetic that more Americans do not serve and punishing those who do volunteer is just more liberal BS to punish the military.
