Due to today's technology, several oil companies have developed engine oils that fight sludge and actually clean your engine. The latest development (and 1 of the best) comes from Pennzoil. There are also detergent gasolines that fight sludge, like Mobil. Perform an oil change, using the new Pennzoil product and change to one of the detergent gasolines. In about a week, perform another oil change to get the sludge out of your crankcase. Make your oil changes after the engine has warmed up for about 5 to 10 minutes. Shut down the engine and wait for about 5 minutes before starting the oil change. Use safety gloves in case the engine got too warm.

Sea Foam is a good place to start. I like "Oil Sludge Remover" by Lubro-Moly corporation. It is butyl cellosolve. You add it to crankcase and drive for 200 miles. It washes things out as you drive. It literally foams the crap out of lifters, chain tensioners (if you have one) and oil passageways. You can also use "Power Tune" from a Mercury boat store. It is in a spray can. You can use the butyl cellosolve to clean PCV vavles, Idle air control valves, throttle bodies and throttle plates. I can't tune an engine properly without it! Also GM used to make their own stuff called "X-66 Crankcase Cleaner". Once you are satisfied that your engine is clean inside, SWEAR OFF REGULAR OILS FOREVER!!!!! From now on use only Mobil One, Amzoil, or ELF oil from France. The ELF is probably the best, though harder to find. In so doing, NO MORE sludge will form, the engine will continue to wash itself clean, and you only need to change oil once a year, unlimited mileage!!! You get to save money all the way around while increasing power, lowering emissions, increasing MPG's. WOW!!

if you have a lot of sludge problems check your pcv system and make sure its working properly. this has a lot to do with fighting sludge. i tend to stay away from additives that knock out sludge. the only one i will use is bg44 moa. you can find it at the better auto stores like car quest. increase your oil change frequency for two or three changes and see if that helps.
