Books that are misogynistic to avoid for teens?

My daughter is eleven and is starting to become an active reader, finally! It was tough allowing her to read the Twilight books. While the romance was fun, the misogyny was credible.

She's too young for Philip Roth. I am aware of the arguments that paint GBShaw as misogynistic too, but, I think he treated both genders with the same disdain.

Are there ones you have read that you would say ill treat or disrespect females simply on gender? She is now exploring the teen section with me on our twice a week trips to the bookstore. If there are specific titles to avoid, please do share and thank you!

Well i personally think that most teen books paint women in a bad light, this is due mostly to the blonde valley girl stereotype that most teen books revolve around. The problem is that no matter what she is going to read something negative of women no matter what, so i suggest just let her read what she wants, but help her to understand and see the negative points without being a content nazi.

I have heard good things about "By the Sword" by Mercedes Lackey. Heard bad things about Tamora Pierce. A review said that her female characters are portrayed as tough, yet they always need to be saved. By a man.

I can understand wanting to avoid misogyny in books because readers get so attached to characters. Sometimes we want to be like them, or subconsciously emulate it. I know a lot of media I was exposed to as a young girl still affects me today.

Try Charles DeLint in the YA section. He's a Canadian author, but he writes strong female characters.

Or try Robin McKinley. She has a gift for retelling fairy tales that is all about the strong heroine.

Let her read misogynistic books, unfortunately it's something she's going to have to deal with because there are men out there who think like that, she might as well read into it and about it, so it's not so shocking for her.

CS Lewis is the only misogynistic author I can think of.
