What is the best shampoo to use to wash out chlorine from swimming.?

Since I have been using the local gym pool to swim laps. I have had to cut 6 inches off my hair, and it had become so dry. I can still smell the chlorine in my hair even after 5 washes! Is there a swimmers shampoo the removes chlorine buildup?

As a competitive swimmer I feel your pain. For your hair i recommend to stop washing it so vigorously! I use head&shoulders, i don't have dandruff but it keeps you hair and scalp really healthy. The chlorine is really hardcore so the gentler the shampoo the better (chlorine will come out no matter what shampoo you use). If the smell really bothers you use Outrageous conditioner its smell will cover anything (don't worry it smells nice!) Every week i do a deep condition, and my hair stays healthy. Avoid specialty swim shampoos they are a rip-off, tried them all no difference.

Keep in mind that the smell might be your skin, the chlorine will hide out in your pores and will leak (if you will) during the day (gross i know). I discovered that it was my scalp as oppose to my hair. In that case its unavoidable (sorry). For that matter so are the hair cuts! I keep my hair short during the comp. season (chin length) otherwise its too hard on your hair!

Sorry for the long answer and hope this helps!

My son is a swimmer. I've had him try several shampoos. I agree with a previous poster that the specialty shampoos are a bit of a scam. I've put him on Suave clarifying shampoo (it's clear) and then a good conditioner (we use Aveda Rosemary Mint). So far this has worked very well. It seems to get his hair really clean. The smell disappears and his hair is very nice after the conditioning. By the way, he swims 5 days per week for about 2 hours.

His hairdresser suggested rinsing his hair with tap water before swimming and to put on a cap. She says this will saturate his hair with clear water and keep the chlorine out a little longer. Can't speak to that. It can't hurt to try.

If you go to your local hair salon, some of them actually carry products that heal chlorine damaged hair. I used it when I swam and it worked awesome. You could also google your question and I am sure you could find something.

ultra swim works well (but don't buy their conditioner) But you can buy any antiresidue shampoo
