With the NFL thinking of putting a Super Bowl in London, do you think American football could be big in Englan?

I would like to see an opinion from someone who has lived in England:

There's been a lot of talk about London hosting a NFL Super Bowl. We all know the NFL wants to expand its reach to Europe to make more money, just like the English Premier League makes a lot of money in the USA with TV rights and jersey sales. Do you think England would embrace American football into a major sport?

Reading the following blog, I don't think the British are dying for American stuff like football and baseball but I don't know personally... I know soccer isn't a huge sport in America but MLS isn't doing too bad. At least it didn't close shop like Arena Football did.

Update:

Great responses! If you believe American football will not be popular in England, how did the NFL sellout Wembley Stadium in a few hours? That's why the NFL believes England is a potential market.

As for NFL Europe, the NFL could say it was a development league (minor league) so that's why the British weren't interested in less-than-the-best players.

It's the same issue with soccer in America. Man U and Barca can sell out 70k stadiums, but many MLS clubs struggle to get 10k attendance. Are fans willing to pay to watch the best players, but not their own domestic teams?

I don't think it has a chance. Over here, one of our most popular sports is a game called rugby which is reasonably similar to American football except that the players don't wear any form of protective clothing. Although there are differences in the two games, I think they are sufficiently similar that rugby has saturated that part of the market and wouldn't let American football get a look in. There's also the added problem that because rugby players don't wear protective clothing in comparison American football players tend to get laughed at for wearing what can seem like full body armour (I appreciate that American football is a lot more dangerous, but that is the perception that it puts across) and so it isn't really respected as a game.

I am going to tell you what I have told others.

Having the NFL host a super bowl in London won't work. Remember NFL Europe? After a few years or so, that was ended because it wasn't popular amongst the Europeans. The NFL was meant to be an American sport. I'm not saying that we shouldn't travel to foreign countries from time to time. What I'm saying is, based on the track record traveling to a European country to play football hasn't done much to gain any international fans for the fan base. The fact is, soccer is more popular in Europe than the NFL is. You can't force others to like what you like. It seems to me the NFL is trying to play the hand of desperation. Right now its looking quite foolish because it hasn't worked in the past and it won't work now. I say keep it where it is.

I think it would be huge in the UK, but very unfair for the fans here in the U.S.A. The fans here are the ones that are paying the high ticket prices, buying the NFL merchandise and how does the NFL reward those fans that are supporting the teams and players? By sending them the Championship game overseas? Ok.. let's do this in return.. at Wimbeldon.. hold all the early round matches there, but have the championship matches here in the U.S... this is just absurd.

European soccer is very affordable to the average fan. The NFL is not. The only reason the NFL would play in London is because of a huge payday. We are all suckers for following the NFL.

well the fact tht everyone will be watching is good but its americas game not britains game seriously also tht its americas sport and tht there should be no overseas happening baby because we allready pay too much for super bowl tickets here think about how much money tht would mean for us to spend on a fricking football team when tht country isnt even a fan of football...im glad about the fact tht there will be good fans cheering but really, britain doesnt have the ability to play football like america can and if it ends up in the olympics we all know who will win AMERICA baby thts all i have to say

I have no problem with the Brits liking American football, but I would have a problem with the Bowl going over seas. That was what NFL Europa was for but should have been expanded. Wrestlemania brings in thousands of fans from over seas. The world series brings in people from over seas. The Superbowl should STAY within the US, period.

i agree the Super Bowl should not be in London ever. But i do think they should continue to bring games over here so we can watch them. I am from scotland and i went down to england to watch the saints charger game last year and i am going back this year to watch the pats v the buccs.

Its all talk ,Do you think with our bad economy that they would move a super bowl and all the money that come with it to London!Never happen!

I hate this idea. I want this game to remain in America.

There is not reason to move one of the greatest events in the country to another nation.
