Power steering noise after hose replacement.?

Both power steering hoses replaced on 94 Merc. Villager (96000 miles)a couple of weeks ago, now there is a growling noise from R. side under hood. Does the power steering unit require air to be purged or is there another problem?

To purge the power steering, turn the steering wheel, with the motor running all the way to the left and hold it 2 or 3 seconds then turn it to the right all the way and hold it 2 or 3 seconds. If the belt starts squealing, tighten the belt,if not ,holding it all the way to one side or the other should work out any air.If you think you have another problem disconnect the power steering belt restart the motor,if the sound is gone, you may need a new pump.If you still have the sound you will have to look else where.Take about 2 1/2 foot of hose,5/8,s or3/4 heater hose or water hose.Put one end to your ear and hold the other 6or8" from the other end.Now move the end opposite from your ear close to the motor moving it back and forth over the motor and you should be able to detect where the noise is coming from.Good luck

    Power Steering Pressure Hose Replacement

  • 1 decade ago

other problem. lol, ford power steering pumps are NOTORIOUS for NOT liking to be run low on fluid and will growl until they finally die. it will not stop growling until you replace it.

basically, you kept driving it after the initial hose leaking problem and the damage was already done to the pump itself. depending on how badly the pump tore itself up, you might want to think about replacing the rack as well as the seal particles in the pump will get into the rack and chew up the rack...which after you replace the pump itself...those pieces will travel back to the pump and in turn tear it up again.

its a vicious cycle that is maddening to some who want to be cheap at the beginning and not just replace everything at once and be done with it once the pump starts growling.

power steering system includes the following: rack/pinion, high pressure hose, low pressure return, and pump. simple as that. oh yeah, and fluid lol.

on the off chance there's air, let the car idle and turn it lock to lock several times and then check the pump reservoir and fill as needed. but that only applies immediately after you replace whatever component that was bad as after normal driving it will bleed itself.
