Ignition: Intermittent Starting on '73 TR6?
Should know this but, like many things, I just don't...
My ignition light is going off and on while the car is running - can someone
tell me what this means?
Other symptoms: Starter solenoid went out a few weeks back and I replaced it
(was 'not engaging' off and for a long time: 3 or 4 or 5 'clicks' with no start,
then would finally engage). It had completely killed the batter so I switched
that out as well.
Now sometimes, after running for a good while (20 minutes or more) the car will
fail to start after being shut off - and even seems to be shutting itself off at
idle.
And here is the truly weird part: The car will then start again after sitting
for some hours.
I don't even know where to start...
Thanks to any and all for suggestions!
John
Maybe it was yours - came out of Arizona and Ohio before that.
And why didn't you fix the damn thing?
Thanks for the diagnosis.

Alternator is going bad, light going on & off. With the alternator going bad is why it is shutting off, as well as the non start issue. The battery is not staying charged due to alternator going bad.
Damn Lucas wiring harness, I use to own this car. Maybe you have my old one.

Sounds like your coil is getting hot and the windings inside are failing.
I used to own, actually my first car, was a 1971 Triumph GT6+ Straight six, dual carbs, independent four wheel suspension with the overdrive unit.
Fast little car and cornered like a dream.
Anyway, they have more ignition problems than ANY other car I've owned.
I replace the coil with an Accel Super coil and never had any more problems with it, well accept for the tranny jumping out of second gear. (shifting fork problem)
Have fun with your car, and good luck.

Unfortunately, the TR-6 has a horrible electrical system. You will continue to have these issues until you completely rewire the car. The last part of your question probably relates to the wiring to your electric fuel pump.

Check all the wiring from the ignition switch to the starter and to the battery. That's the best place to start.
