I am TOTALLY and COMPLETELY on Anwens side! Early spaying and neutering is NOT a good idea. I have a puppy that's 3 months old and people are already asking me when i'm having him altered. My answer? NOT ANYTIME SOON! Like Anwen says...they NEED their hormones for other reasons than just sex. They need them for bone development, and muscle development and a host of other reasons. IF I neuter my boy it will be because he's physically mature and ready for it and not because I don't want any puppies running around...I'm a responsible pet owner and I know how to keep my dogs in check. If it were puppies everyone was worried about there wouldn't be so many "oops" breedings if they'd just kept the dog either confined or at their side. And IF (god forbid) I ended up with puppies I wouldn't just give them away to anyone that wants them. I would screen homes and do home checks and make sure the pet was a good match for the family. I would take responsibility for MY irresponsibility...If i ever were to breed...I would do it the RIGHT way...I am thinking about it...BUT I'm NOWHERE NEAR done researching it. Put it this way...if I do breed and something goes wrong...I would be dealing with it myself the RIGHT way rather than coming on here and asking about it. As for cropping and docking. It is done at a very young age and doesn't cause any unnecessary pain or mental anguish. I personally like the look of a dobie with cropped ears and tail. If I got a dobie I would have the ears done. In some breeds it just wouldn't be the same. I'm indifferent when it comes to cropping and docking...it's a matter of personal preference. While there are some breeds that I prefer cropped and or docked there are others that don't look as good cropped (for example: a great dane...i like their natural ears...and a pittie...i like their natural ears too)
