I currently use the defrag that came with Windows XP. Would it be better to use smart defrag? Why or why not?

IMO, the best alternative to Windows defrag is Diskeeper09. Since its automatic and runs even as you use the PC, once installed you dont need to bother abt defrag at all. It also has useful features like low free space defrag and system file defrag. You could evaluate the trial version and decide.

Smart defrag cannot defrag system files like the MFT and page file. Neither can the windows defragger.
The best defragger IMO is Diskeeper 2009 Professional. It's fast, flexible, powerful and gices great results while using only minimum amount of resources. It's auto defrag mode is where it really shines.

Don't know Smart Defrag and I would recommend DiskKeeper as a good professional product.
But, the defrag provided with windows is actually a bare bones one (original from DiskKeeper). They provide enough functionality to do the basic job but not enough to compete/replace with companies that sell this type of software.
The default version is ok but you'll get more features (like schedule and forget) from packages you buy.
