To Christians: What is your interpretation of Genesis 1:27?
"God created man in his own image"
My initial thought was that meant God made us to look like Him. However I noticed the lack of capitalisation in "his" meaning it cannot refer to God. What do you think?

If Genesis had originally been written in English your question might have some meaning.

“GOD proceeded to create the man in his image, in God’s image he created him; male and female he created them.” So says the inspired record, but what does it mean? How were the first man and woman created in God’s image?—Genesis 1:27.
Were they physically like God? No, that is impossible. Man is human, fleshly, designed to live on the earth. God is spirit, living in unimaginable heavenly glory that no human can even approach. (Exodus 33:18-20; 1 Corinthians 15:50) How, then, was man made in God’s image? In that man was given the ability to exercise God’s outstanding attributes—love, justice, wisdom, and power—as well as other qualities.

Some Scriptual translation do have "Him" capitalized. But this tranliteration from the Hebrew might help.
"in his own image"
tselem (tseh'-lem)
a phantom, i.e. (figuratively) illusion, resemblance; hence, a representative figure, especially an idol -- image, vain shew.
This might be further viewed through Ephesians 4:22-24
Regarding your former way of life, you were taught to strip off your old nature, which is being ruined by its deceptive desires, to be renewed in your mental attitude, and to clothe yourselves with the new nature, which was created according to God's IMAGE in righteousness and true holiness.
(International Standard Version - 2008)
I think IMAGE can be referred to on many different levels.

Not all bible versions capitalize the pronouns referring to God. But English grammar suggests the "his" in this passage refers back to God. But more importantly, the "man" does not refer to all mankind.
Since God is a spirit (John 4:24) man could only be created in the spiritual image of God. But according to Genesis 5:1-3, only Adam and Eve were truly created in the image of God. The rest of us are the results of pro-creation, and carry the image of our father Adam. “This is the written account of Adam’s line. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. He created them male and female and blessed them. And when they were created, he called them “man.” When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth.

At creation, God the Father, God the Son ( Jesus) and God the Holy Spirit were present together. Man was created with the same attributes ad God, which is goodness, holiness, righteousness, love, peace, etc. All the attributes that are attributed to God were given to mankind. Mankind in his own selfishness, and sinful desires decided to go their own way, and turn his(her) back on God and therefore we were in need of a savior to bring us back into a right relationship to God.

G-D created Adam in His image, all of the other races were created the same way that the animals were created, 'on the 6th day, G-D created man, made He them male and female and told them to go forth and multiply and subdue the land,' G-D created these races to look the same and have the same characteristics, Africans, Asians, Indians, Native Americans, Eskimo's, Arabs, all have their own unique appearance and easy to identify, just like everything else in nature.

Jehovah God is a "spirit" being.
We are flesh and blood.
"What does it mean to be created “in God’s image”? Simply this: Man was made in the likeness of God, having godly attributes—such as justice, wisdom, and love—that set him apart from animals. (Compare Colossians 3:9, 10.) These qualities gave him the ability to choose to do good or bad, making him a free moral agent. There was no sin in the first man, no evil or suffering in his life, when he was created."

capitalization is from translators
they are not in the original language
Gen 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

"In his image" means that we were made with diluted qualities that he has.
He is love - 1 John 4:8 .... & we love
We have diluted versions of his marvellous qualities & attributes
Such as...
Justice
Mercy
Compassion
Empathy
Long suffering ... and many more
Because we are not perfect, our reflection of these attributes is lessened greatly but all the good qualities that we do have, no matter how limited, are from our heavenly Father.

God created us in His spiritual and mental image-we feel emotions like Him, we have a consciousness like Him, and we have eternal spiritual existence, like Him.
It is generally not thought to mean a physical image, as God has not definite physical appearance.

You'd need to look at the Hebrew to see if that's actually true about the capitalisation. Not the Christian bible's old testament. The christian bible's old testament has a couple of thousand differences in it from the Hebrew bible it's supposed to be based on. So I wouldnt base any understandings or decisions about anything from the christian bible's old testament.
