2 AnswersRunning7 years agoCan you be charged for violating a law that you had no reasonable means of following?
For example, let's say you have a court order appear in court on a certain date. Prior to that time, you get into a car accident and fall into a coma. For not appearing in court, the judge issues a warrant for your arrest.
Can something like this example actually happen, or are there protections in the law for when there simply isn't an option for you to follow the law?
5 AnswersLaw & Ethics7 years agoRequirement for a "correct" religion?
I've been thinking of what requirements can be used to determine whether or not a specific religion (and the associate modes of worship associated) can or can not be correct. Note that this isn't to determine which one is correct (if any), but rather to determine which can not be correct.
This includes different denominations or sects within the same religion, such as Islam's Sunni and Shia, or Christian denominations such as Baptists and Catholics.
The the qualifier is this: Is it possible, in a practical sense, for every single man, woman, and child to be a faithful follower of this religion? Would it be possible, or would society break down due to issues like lack of production or world-wide voluntary hermitage or poverty?

Are there places that let you get pictures taken in old-style photographs, such as Daguerreotype? It seems that it could have some demand from hobbyists or as a novelty.

6 AnswersLaw & Ethics7 years agoAmerican civil rights only for Americans?
I see in the news today talk about whether the US military should use a drone strike against an American citizen fighting with Al Qaeda. That got me thinking: We as Americans talk about American civil rights. The right to free speech, the right to bear arms, the right to due process and protection from unwarranted search and seizure, the inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Now, my question is, can we as Americans claim these rights while denying those rights to non-Americans? Is there really a moral difference between using a drone strike against an American terrorist versus using one against a foreign terrorist?
While we shouldn't force other national governments to comply without our rights, can we morally, in our own actions, deny our rights to others who just happen to not be fellow American citizens?
2 AnswersLaw & Ethics7 years agoArmy ranks: Specialist and Corporal?
What determines whether a soldier in the U.S. Army is promoted to Specialist or Corporal? Is corporal rank only given to combat roles or something like that? Is there a difference in pay or status between corporals and specialists?
2 AnswersMilitary7 years agoDesigning a computer program, in layman's terms?
I'm looking for someone to describe the basicsteps necessary for me to design a computer program, from the ground up.
My program is supposed to be a sort of database, similar to genealogy/family tree software, where data such as names and years is translated into objects in the program.
So what I'm looking for is, what writing program should I use? (Java?) What do I need to do to get it up and running to start writing? What other stuff might I need to know?
I understand that this is a big job and will likely be a very long-term project, but it's something I want to do.

to $20 Quadrillion? (that's $20,000,000,000,000,000)
Since they just want to keep upping the debt limit indefinitely, shouldn't they just do it all at once to save time and effort?

3 AnswersNewborn & Baby8 years agoThe alleged Boston Bomber is being charged with using WMDs...?
What exactly is the definition of a Weapon of Mass Destruction?
I can't help but think back to Iraq, where Saddam Hussein was accused of having weapons of mass destruction. Certainly Hussein's army had bombs more powerful than a couple of pressure cooker IEDs. Would those count as WMDs under the prosecution's definition? In that case the US miltary absolutely has, and uses, plenty of WMDs.
Or can they just call it a WMD if they decide that's what they want it to be?

Do newer cars require them more expensive synthetic oil for oil changes? I need to know because I don't want the higher oil change prices.
The mechanic says they do. The salesman says they don't. I don't trust either of them.
1 AnswerMaintenance & Repairs8 years agoDoes God exist on a higher dimension?
I have heard it said that God exists on a higher dimension. As in, there's the three dimensions that we control (width, length, and height) and a fourth dimension that we experience but do not control (time). God then exists on some higher dimension. It could be the fourth dimensions, it could be the tenth dimension for all we know.
So the way God interacts with us is how we might interact with a sentient creature living in a two-dimensional plane. We can describe our three-dimensional world to an extent, but the two-dimensional being won't be able to quite understand it. If you wanted to show it a cube, for example, the only way you could do it would be to show an image of a two-dimensional "unfolded" cube. A similar method is done in three-dimensional representations of the four-dimensional hypercube.

Assuming no atmosphere or other sort of resistance, what would terminal velocity be for an object caught in the gravity of another object, as in an object calling down towards the Earth. Or would there be a terminal velocity at all? Would it just keep accelerating until impact?

I'm trying to get a general idea of when's a good time to say "I love you" so someone. I know it's different from couple to couple. But just say your gender (if it's not obvious), how long you waited before saying it, and how your boyfriend/girlfriend took it (run away screaming, loves you back, etc)

1 AnswerMovies8 years agoSeparation of Church and State: marriage?
As we in the U.S. know, there's all this talk about gay marriage and separation of church and state and all that. Myself, I am a fundamentalist Christian, but I also don't think it is right to legislate morality.
So why continue to link marriage as both a religious and civil relationship? I would propose separating marriage into two forms, 'marriage', which would be a religious union, with the government side being the 'civil union.' The civil union would carry all the benefits associated with today's 'marriage', as far as next-of-kin privileges, tax benefits, etc, but would not be associate with religion; religious institutions would not be forced to identify civil unions they don't consider to be moral (such as gay marriage), so their rights would not be affected.
Likewise, 'marriage' would be a purely religious union; it would be seen as a legitimate relationship by one's religious community, even if the government did not see it as valid (such as groups who wish to practice polygamy; the government would not identify the relationship as valid for benefits, but they could still marry with the blessing of their church).
Couples could get married, they could enter a civil union, or they could do both, depending on the situation. For example, non-religious couples could get a civil union, but not go through a church to enter a marriage.
This could solve plenty of issues concerning gay marriage rights, etc.
