Did newborns have their umbilical cords cut in the old days?

or were they left to fall off on their own? When did the modern practice of tying off and cutting the cord start?

Update:

Niko: The placenta is expelled shortly after childbirth, that is what the umbilical cord is attached to. If it is not cut the umbilical cord will shrivel up and fall off on its own after a few days.

Exactly which 'old days' are you referring to? 100 years ago? 10.000 years? 175.000 years?

Anyway, even animals bite through the umbilical cord and don't just leave a nice juicy bloody placenta rot next to their newborns to attract hungry predators. Why would humans ever have been any different?

Of course they were cut. The mom didn't just walk around with her baby still attached to her vagina lol

I imagine primitive people would bite them off.
