Internet Explorer long pauses even before/after the upgrade.?

XP home, IE 8 because 7 had problems. First time I click IE there is LONG delay for page to load. links work ok. As long as I dont close it the delay does not happen again. I do cleanup, defrag, virus and malware scans regular. To much on system to format and re-install windows. Wanted to Ghost ISO my system before problems but that never happened. Please tell me what I can do.

    Go to Tools >> Internet Options >> Connections >> LAN Settings, and make sure the 'Automatically detect settings' box is unchecked.
