Has anyone rescued a starving horse?
I saw a horse today that was starving to death. I asked if they might sell it. I left my name & number. First I would have a vet check him out for a prognosis & what would be involved. I am no expert. I know I could probably buy a healthy horse for what this will cost. I need some good advice from some experienced horse people before I make a decision. Soon too, I don't know how much time is left.

good back, and talk to them about the horse, ask them whats wrong with it, if its an abuse case, call SPCA.

Wanting to rescue a horse is a noble thing but really opens up a big can of worms unless the present owner is willing to turn the horse over to you.You would then be responsible for vet, blacksmith and any other bills you may incur.Your best bet would be to contact the SPCA and they should be able to hook you up with someone. In my area a farm named Days End is a lic. horse rescue operation and they do a wonderful job of rehabilitating horses and finding them new homes in fact I have some friends that volunteer there.Im sure there is something similar in your area.

This horse could be very expensive to help. You will have to pay for feeding and expert help from a vet. You will need medication such as wormers. After you help the horse recover, you don't know if it will be rideable for you or have much of a resale value.
I'm not saying that you shouldn't help this horse - it is a very generous thing to do. You just have to be prepared for all possibilities, including that the horse might die after you spend all your money on it.
Another option that you could consider would be to contact your local animal rescue services such as the SPCA. They have funding and expert staff for situations just like this one. They could rescue the horse or they might provide you with help and advice if you decide to go ahead with it yourself.
Whatever you decide, good luck and I hope it works out.

The horse could be very old and that is why it looks like it is starving. Age is very important in starting a regimen and then checking the horses teeth to make sure they dont need floated. Age is definately the most important thing at this point.
