Why do some vegetarians eat fish?

I have nothing against vegetarians but this has always confused me. Why do some vegetarians not eat meat/animals but then eat fish? Why do fish not count as an animal?

People who eat fish are not vegetarians.

    They are pescetarians.

    Source(s): I'm a pescetarian.

    Stereotyped labels anyway.

Pesco-Vegetarians would be those eating fish.

A vegetarian who eats diary products is a lacto-vegetarian.

A vegetarian who eats eggs is an ovo-vegetarian.

So, a vegetarian who eats all these is an Ovo-Lacto-Pesco-Vegetarian.

A vegetarian who doesn't eat any animal products is a vegan.

As to why, well one must remember that being a vegetarian is not just about not eating meat, but eating the 'fruits and roots' in the right balance, otherwise can get sick. So, maybe the person isn't doing that, thus supplementing the food with fish (and other seafood). Fish is the most healthy meat.

On a personal note, minus the technical term pescatarian (which is a form of vegetarian). If you want to know more about the different types of vegetarians you can google types of vegetarians. For me I am a vegetarian becauae I hate how and why animals are killed. Some people, though do not consider fish animals. I don't eat anything that causes the death of an animal. I do sometimes however eat dairy (very rarely) products...not eggs though.

Technically a "vegetarian" who eats fish is a pescitarian.

Not all vegetarians are vegetarian for animal rights. Some for health reasons, and that may be why some eat fish.

I'm a vegetarian and I don't eat meat or fish.People who eat fish and calls themselves vegetarians confuse me.Maybe they think that eating animals that live in water are not the same as eating animals that can't live in water. If people eat anything that breaths they aren't vegetarians.I was even encourage by a nurse to eat fish just because I just eat vegetables and other stuff vegetarians eat.and she said that im confuse about what it means to be a vegetarian lol.I even got a weird look just because I said im a vege.We can survive without eating an animal.

    Real vegetarians don't eat animals.

Some people call themselves "vegetarians" but really aren't.

I'm not sure why they do that.

I'm vegetarian and I think it's annoying when people eat fish or chicken and say they are vegetarians. But what am I supposed to do? Arrest them?

Well those people aren't vegetarian, they may just have a thing for land animals. I started out that way when I spent time on my step dad's farm but eventually weened off aquatic life because sea creatures are majestic in their own way.

I know people who still eat sea animals because Jesus apparently ate fish but didn't eat land animals. This is debatable, but I remember as a child reading many stories about Jesus helping fishermen, giving out fish to the poor, and multiplying fish to share with the needy. There are no stories about him actually *eating* fish, but people assume he did.

Also health nuts who are not into animal rights will eat fish for it's benefits. Fish meat is considered healthier than the meat of land animals.

There are SO many people claiming to be vegetarian and eat fish, fish is an animal I hate it when people call there self vegetarian because they simply just cannot give up fish. Fish is really bad for you the water they live in is so dirty that is can make you sick and there are tons of other ways to get protein most people over does on protein which is'nt good.

    Vegetarians never eat fish.

    Pescitarians do.

    Vegetarians never eat fish.

I think the reason pescitarians choose to eat fish is that a fish has a very passive face so it's harder to imagine them in pain.

This is about the dumbest thing I've read in a while (especially many of the "answers").

If you eat a living creature, you're not a vegetarian. They can call themselves whatever else they want, but they're not vegetarians.

I'm (mostly) vegan. Vegetarians don't eat any death-based animal products (where the animal had to die to obtain it, such as gelatin, made from collagen), but they will eat non-death-based animal products, such as dairy and eggs. Vegans don't use any animal products at all...even if the animal is alive when the product is extracted. We don't even use honey.
