Computer no longer recognizes D:/ drive (CD drive)?
My computer no longer recognizes my cd drive. When I open up my computer its not even there. I found out trying to download software. The door opens and retracts but does nothing with the cd in. I went into BIOS at startup and the drive is recognized but I don't really know exactly what Im looking for after that. I recently upgraded to windows XP and havent used the drive since then. I assume something happened when I did that. I'm trying to download the software for a camera/mic so I can talk to my brother in the Air Force. He was just deployed to South Korea and this is the only way to contact him. I need to get this figured out soon. Thanks for any help. I can provide more detail if needed. Thanks.

Right click on my computer and select properties and go to device manager, see if there is a yellow exclamation mark next to the atapi device, if so then you will need to get winxp drivers for it, which shouldnt be too hard. if that does not work there maybe upper and lower filters in the registry that prevent the drive from being detected, you may need to delete those to get it to work. However, prior to doing this 2nd step make sure you backup your registry before messing with it as any miscalculations on your part may cause your computer to crash. Look at the link below for more info on this step.

You say you just upgraded to XP. Aren't you about 8 years late?
Anyway check the BIOS first.
Next boot off the Windows CD to see if it sees the drive.
If it does see it then you are having trouble with the ATAPI drivers in Windows.
This can get complex from here so check out the basics first.

It may not have a drive letter assigned to it in Windows. Go to the control panel, administrative tools, computer management, drive management, storage, disk management, scroll down on the right side to find the cd drive and see if it just says disk 1 , disk 2, then right click on it and select change drive letter, select the first available
letter and click OK.

well... no... plug and play should recognize it guys... because if you see it in the bios... Windows supports it if it's plug and play... i didn't need a driver when i bought mine a year ago... and plug and play picked mine right up... so... there should be no problem of it not picking it up on your computer. so... just how old is your computer?
